5 Best Selling Home Security Camera Systems 2018

Home Security Cameras

Quick Navigation

Innovations such as in-home package delivery make security more important than ever. To keep your home safe, you need a security system with cameras that allow you to check your home no matter where you are. Whether you're into voice-controlled automation or smart hubs you can manage from your phone, there are security cameras to fit your needs.

Security Camera Basics

Before you make a purchase, it's important to know what to look for in home security cameras, based on your home monitoring needs.

There are two basic types of security camera: Motion detectors (aka infrared cameras), and CCTV cameras. In this article, we'll focus on the Closed Circuit TV cameras.

To find the right cameras for your home, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Where will the camera be mounted?
  • check
    Batteries or Wired?
  • What kinds of capabilities do I need?
  • Is the camera compatible with my smart hub?

Where Will the Camera Be Mounted?

If you're looking to buy outdoor security cameras, make sure they are weatherproof, not just waterproof. Raindrops, ice, snow, and direct sunlight obscure details, making it difficult to determine if a monitored area is secure. Also, look at the mounting hardware to see if you'll be able to properly position the camera where you need it.

Batteries or Wired?

Battery-operated cameras are ideal for areas where wiring would be difficult and expensive, such as outdoors  at the boundaries of your property. Indoors, wiring may be a better option if your cameras are to be permanently mounted, eliminating the need for periodic battery changes.

What Kinds of Capabilities Do I Need?

Wireless security cameras vary widely in capability. Two-way communications allow you to talk with another person in real time through your cameras. A one-way audio system lets you talk to the person in your camera (although they won't be able to talk back). Built-in infrared (IR) cameras detect motion and send alerts.

Several models come with cloud storage of video recordings. If you buy a model that offers cloud storage, be sure to check the pricing. Otherwise, you may find yourself paying a lot of money to store your CCTV camera footage in the cloud.

Now that you know what to look for in a security camera, here are the most popular wireless security cameras on Amazon.

Yi 1080p Home Security Camera

The Yi 1080p Home Camera wireless security camera packs several features that make it a worthy choice for anyone who wants to keep an eye on their baby or elderly loved one. Video is recorded at 15fps, which saves on storage space, if at the expense of video quality.

Custom activity alerts make it easy to get real-time notifications when your baby cries and when movement is detected by the built-in sensor. Two-way communications make it easy to communicate with others when you're in a different room.

Storage includes a 32GB microSD memory card with a paid cloud storage option (cloud storage must be purchased separately).

Features

  • 24/7 Full HD recording @ 1080p/15fps
  • 2-Way Communications via Wi-Fi
  • Enhanced Night Vision
  • Activity Alerts

Pros

  • Affordable Price
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Much cheaper than similar cameras

Cons

  • Privacy policy gives manufacturer the right to access, collect, and use virtually all of your personal information
  • Motion-triggered activity alerts are not 'real-time'
  • Must be plugged into wall socket

Customer Review

I am impressed with this camera and what YI is offering their customers. They are definitely competing hard with the more expensive well known players like Nest, Blink, Canary, Samsung etc. I highly recommend giving this a try if you don't mind the power cord. At this price I might just buy more.

Ammozon, Top Contributor

Conclusion

The Yi 1080p Home Camera is a great buy with features and performance comparable to much more expensive brands. If you're looking for a single camera to monitor your loved one, pets, or point of entry for deliveries, this is an excellent choice.

The privacy policy, however, gives Yi way too much access to your personal data. I wouldn't be comfortable with a company requiring that I allow them to access and use virtually all of my personal data, including video footage, for pretty much anything they want. If you're concerned about privacy, this isn't the camera for you.

Zmodo Wireless Home Security Camera System

Fast and easy is the name of the setup game for this home security system. Indoor cameras include a 115º wide viewing angle and 90º adjustment to see an entire room. The outdoor cameras have night vision that's capable of monitoring activity up to about 65 feet, plenty for many front and back yards.

The 500GB hard drive in the Network Video Recorder (NVR) allows you plenty of storage for recording video from all 8 of your cameras 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is particularly useful for small business owners who need to keep a close eye on their property all hours of the day and night.

Features

  • Wireless system automatically connects with its cameras
  • 24/7 HD recording
  • 500GB NVR Hard Drive storage
  • Remote and local playback on your phone or desktop
  • chevron-right
    3-Year limited lifetime warranty

Pros

  • Operating range of up to 100 feet
  • High-quality video feeds and recording
  • Customizable Motion Detection

Cons

  • Motion detection is too sensitive
  • Can't view all 8 cameras simultaneously on phone or tablet
  • Setting up camera feeds on PC is confusing and difficult

Customer Review

When I ordered these I really didn't know what to expect. The trouble of set up, installation, the pesky quirks that always seem to pop up when dealing with wireless devices through your home's sheetrock walls...I couldn't have been more surprised. I have the cameras spread out, two as far as 100' from the router, outside. Everything works great. Clear crisp HD live feeds. Awesome. Especially for the price. The App works great too.

All in all, I am glad I purchased this. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Sam Proffitt, Verified Purchase

Conclusion

With 500GB local storage in the NVR, easy setup and operation, and an affordable price point, the Zmodo Wireless Home Security Cameras System is a great value.

Better yet, they don't ask for unlimited access to your security camera footage or personal data.

EZVIZ Full HD 1080p Outdoor Surveillance System

Available in a variety of channel and camera configurations, this outdoor surveillance system has sensitive cameras with detection distances that are better than most competitors. Ambient light vision comes in at up to 100 feet, while total darkness reaches 65 feet, the maximum distance for ambient light vision in other brands.

Unlike the competition, EZVIZ uses conventional BNC cables to connect the cameras to your network. AT 1TB, the DVR has more than enough room to store recordings from each video.

Features

  • Complete home surveillance kit in one box
  • customizable, advanced motion detection
  • End-to-end video encryption
  • Multi-layer security
  • chevron-right
    Lifetime tech support

Pros

  • Manufacturer takes security seriously
  • BNC cables deliver high-quality video
  • Impressive night vision

Cons

  • BNC cables might not be long enough
  • No Fast Forward when reviewing video footage
  • Several minute delay between motion detection and alert being sent

Customer Review

For anyone in the market, I am really impressed with this system. The camera picture quality is impressive, I even put my cameras on the lowest resolution and they are still impressive.

The app and the camera software are easy to use and interface on. I am very happy with overall performance.

Panozz77, Verified Purchase

Conclusion

While more expensive than other models, the high-quality video cameras and 1TB of DVR storage make this a candidate for homes or small businesses where you need 24-hour surveillance. The end-to-end encryption makes this home security system stand out from the rest.

Customer Review

My neighborhood has gotten a bit questionable recently. Lots of arrests being made and lots of robberies. I had ordered more expensive security cameras in the past that just didn't cut the mustard. I ordered funlux cameras mainly because of the price and when I installed them I expected them to be mediocre. I was very impressed with their user friendliness, clarity, quality and ease of use with my iPhone. They install very easily. The quality is second to none and the view is amazing. I can see my entire back yard, front yard and side of my house with little effort. They are very user friendly. No special hardware, tools or specialist needed to install them. I was able to see clearly up to about 50 feet. The alerts make my family feel secure and safe. I no longer feel like a prisoner in my home. I would highly recommend buying these cameras.

Conclusion

With a price well under $100, the Funlux Wireless Two-Way Home Security Camera 3 Pack is a great value. While the cameras are of better quality than some of the competition, they lack the ability to zoom and pan. For optimal connectivity, cameras must be placed where your Wi-Fi signal is strongest, otherwise they may lose connection. The Funlux app has limited capabilities which some customers have found frustrating. Viewing video footage appears to be limited to viewing single frames without the benefit of rewind or fast forward.

If you're looking for a system that has the basic features and functionality you expect, consider spending a little more money to get what you really want.

Wansview Wireless 1080p IP Camera

A full HD camera with 1080p resolution and 25fps recording makes this one of the best indoor security cameras you can buy. Built-in storage takes a Micro SD card up to 128GB in capacity, more than enough to store continuously recorded video.

Zoom, pan, and tilt as much as you with this camera. The 350 degree horizontal pan and 76 degree vertical tilt allows you to see virtually everything in a room. Built-in night vision has a range of up to 20 feet.

Features

  • True 1080p resolution
  • Smart pan, tilt, and zoom
  • Two-way communication with built-in speaker and microphone

Pros

  • Sharp video footage
  • Privacy ensured with local storage
  • Live stream and playback on Windows and Mac computers

Cons

  • microphone and audio could be better
  • Passwords cannot include special characters
  • Camera works only on 2.5GHz Wi-Fi

Customer Review

Before I bought this camera, I had already purchased 5 other Wansview cameras....so it was an easy decision to buy another one.
The most eye-catching thing about this camera initially is the price. For a camera that does so much, the price is amazing. As an owner of other Wansview cameras, I already knew the product would be easy to set up and operate. My sentiments where confirmed when the camera arrived a few days after purchase......and was set up and operating within minutes.

If you are on the fence with this product, I would strongly suggest giving it a try. It's well worth the money, works amazingly well and you can count on great support should you need it.
What else do you need?

Shane M., Verified Purchase

Conclusion

High-quality video, combined with the ability to pan, zoom, and tilt the camera as needed, plus continuous recording make this a great value. Simple setup takes only a few minutes and, if something goes wrong, Wansview customer support takes great care of you.

If you need a single camera to monitor a loved one or a pet, this is the camera to get.
